How did you get into stand-up comedy?

I used to work in adult education, and someone came to me after the class and said I should do stand up comedy. I had always enjoyed comedy but never saw myself as a comedian. That comment made me see what I hadn’t seen. After that I booked my first gig.

Where do you get your inspiration for your material?

A few years ago, I began researching for my memoir Through The Leopard’s Gaze. I discovered so much I never knew about myself, family, tribe and the research has spawned 9 comedy specials and several books. I love talking about my history and background. Someone once said to me talk about what you know and people will see the authenticity of your material.

How do you deal with hecklers or a tough audience?

In my experience, comedy should not be confrontational. What are they saying, can I make a joke out of it and move on instead of turning on an audience member. If They are a**holes then get the audience to kick them out so they feel like you are on the same side. If you put down and audience member it becomes like boxers in the ring and you could come out worse therefore ruining your image and the night.

What is the most memorable moment you've had on stage?

I recorded my BBC Radio 4 series during Covid with social distancing. When I came near to the end of the recording, I said I wanted to dedicate my show to my mum who died a year before. An audience member let out a big gasp of sorrow which completely triggered me. I began crying, the audience began crying making it the comedy show where everyone was crying. One big Scottish guy pushed his chair back and announced that he was coming to the stage to give me a hug. There wasn’t a single dry eye in the room.

What's been the highlight of your career as a stand-up comedian so far?

This is a difficult question. It’s like asking which is my favourite child. I guess seeing my memoir go out to print with the story my mother and I had worked so hard to put into paper was really incredible. It felt like releasing a dove.

Do you already have an impression of Switzerland and the Swiss, if so what is it?

Haha! It’s the place where I can recover Africa’s stolen money. That and African chocolates ☺ but seriously I think of Heidi coming down the mountains with milk.

If you had to choose a favourite city, Zurich or Basel?

I’m yet to discover both.
